Altdorf created different categories of drawings. Some were examples intended for exhibition. Most, however, were made for his own use, as he developed ideas for sculpture or glass. Although such drawings might be regarded as ‘unfinished’, they offer an insight into the artist’s thinking and working processes. Often, too, they represent ideas that the artist was unable to realise, through lack of materials or patronage.
